Frontier Food Deserts

Through our work and experience in frontier New Mexico, NCFC staff came to recognize that that the challenges faced in frontier food deserts are very different from those in urban, suburban, or rural food deserts. As a result, NCFC is working on a number of programs to address food access in frontier communities, with frontier southwest New Mexico as our pilot site. These programs including:

  • Conducting a study on the feasibility of establishing a food hub to serve frontier communities in New Mexico. The study is being funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Local Food Promotion Program.
  • Providing staff support and capacity building for the Southwest New Mexico Food Policy Council to address food policy issues in four frontier New Mexico counties.
